Preparing the move
Here are a few general suggestions that will make packing easier:
1. Don't reuse any boxes that have been used many times and are starting to wear. Pack all boxes to the full capacity.
2. Label all boxes as soon as you're done packing them (e.g. "Bathroom", "Bedroom", "Kitchen"). When labeling, draw an arrow on the box to indicate which side is the top of the box and write the room label on multiple sides. This will save you a ton of time unpacking (or trying to find that one item that you need) and will help ensure the safety of your property while it's being shipped.
3. Wrap all glassware, china, and other fragile items individually in towels or packing material. Wrap each item in newspaper.
Dishes
Wrap dishes in newspaper. Place crushed paper on top of the bundle to protect rims and make a level base for the next tier. Horizontal cardboard dividers can be helpful in keeping layers level.
Glasses
Glasses should be individually wrapped with newspaper inserted into the goblet and around the stem.
Stereos and other electronics
Pack electronics in their original boxes or similar. As long as proper packing materials are used (bubble wrap, newsprint, foam sheeting, comforters/blankets, pillows, etc.), electronics can be safely packed in sturdy boxes.
Books
Place books flat in the box, alternating the spine and open side of the book.
Mirrors and Glass
Wrap the picture or mirror with cushion of clean paper and place in box. Always stand glass, pictures and mirrors on their edge.
Computers
Store computers in their original boxes. Use proper packing materials such as bubble wrap, newspaper, comforters/blankets, pillows, etc. (Non static)
